Many of the best competitors in the world all have one thing in common, they spend countless hours practicing. Drilling Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Techniques and spending countless hours mastering the basics can really improve your game.
Drilling outside of class can be difficult. Especially if you need work in a specific area or having trouble with something you have learned during class. Using the BJJ Lab from 11-1 daily can really improve your trouble areas and supplement your training.
Recently a white belt was having problems with his grips. He just didn’t know what to do with his hands. He was also having problems keeping his opponents pinned or controlled when moving. He came to lab and Coach Chuck set him up with a blue belt to help him drill grips, grip breaks, as well as where to have his hands in different positions. It solved almost all his issues. Instead of the constant hand fighting that had no purpose. He was able to identify where he should be placing his hands and what he should be attacking with his hands. He was now conserving more energy and going into less scrambles and had more control over his training partners. The following night he came to class and during rolling, he was able to apply almost everything he learned in lab the day before. It also left him with new questions to progress his learning. This is the progress we want for all our students.
At BJJ Lab we use many types of drilling, Repetition Drilling, Time Drilling, Technical Drills, and Movement Drills. Using these types of drilling can supplement what you have learned during night class.
Technical Drilling: This is done in a slow technical manner, ensuring everything is done correctly. This is not for speed. Attention to every detail is critical. Using this type of drilling first allows you to do the technique correctly before you build up speed. If you are practicing techniques poorly, you will do poor techniques faster.
Repetition Drilling is working for 2-5 minutes and doing 3-5 repetitions on each side and then switch so your partner can do 3-5 repetitions on each side until the time expires.
Movement Drills: This is the same as a technical drill except now you are doing this for speed. You start slowly then start speeding it up.
Timed Drilling is setting a timer for 1-2 minutes and do as many correct executions of the technique as possible until the time expires. Once the time expires you partner then goes. You rest on the down time and can use this as a type of workout.
It is important to use drilling as a primary training tool to develop your techniques. This is why the BJJ Lab is important as drilling is the primary teaching tool. The Lab also allows you to experiment and work through problems you are having with a specific technique or strategy in your game.
BJJ Lab goes everyday from 11 am – 1 pm.
